Lawtell, LA – St. Landry Parish Government is proud to announce the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Eagle’s Nest Park, set to take place on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 3:00 PM at the site of the former Lawtell High School.

Eagle’s Nest Park is named in honor of the former Lawtell High School, whose mascot was the eagle. The park will be located where the school once stood, preserving its legacy for future generations.

The creation of Eagle’s Nest Park is part of a broader initiative by St. Landry Parish Government to develop new recreational spaces for the community. During a special meeting on December 11, 2025, the St. Landry Parish Council approved the purchase of the former Indian Hills Country Club in Opelousas and the abandoned Lawtell High School using state grant funding.

St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard envisions Eagle’s Nest Park as a vibrant space for community members to gather and enjoy outdoor activities.

“Eagle’s Nest Park is just the beginning of our vision to enhance recreational opportunities across St. Landry Parish. We plan to develop a youth park along LA 35 and a walking trail on this 10-acre property in Lawtell. This project is about honoring our past while building a brighter future for our community,” said Bellard.

Louisiana State Representative for District 40 Dustin Miller also played a key role in securing funding for the project and emphasized the importance of investing in the Lawtell community.

“Helping to secure the funding for Eagle’s Nest Park was an important step in expanding opportunities for families in Lawtell. This park will provide a safe and welcoming space for children and families to gather, and I am proud to support projects that contribute to the growth and well-being of our communities,” said Miller.

Eagle’s Nest Park is expected to be fully developed and open to the public by late 2026. St. Landry Parish Government invites all stakeholders, community members, and local leaders to join in celebrating this milestone at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
