August 17, 2023 | OPELOUSAS, LA – Parish President Jessie Bellard is pleased to announce the revealing of the restored St. Landry Courthouse on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at 10:00 AM located on the Courthouse Square (118 South Court Street, Opelousas, LA). The event will be held at the courthouse grounds, and members of the public are cordially invited to join us as we display the new and improved courthouse.

Originally constructed in 1939, the St. Landry Parish Courthouse has long served as the heart of the community. Throughout the years, the courthouse has weathered the test of time, standing through countless historic events. However, the passage of time had taken its toll on the building, sparking the need for repairs and renovations.

Parish President Jessie Bellard stated, “Our mission statement during the renovations has been ‘honoring our history while preserving our future.’ We must maintain our public buildings to uphold their historic values and to keep them standing for future generations.”

Among the renovations are sealing of the exterior walls, window replacements, installation of new awnings, Assessor’s office renovations, the addition of a handicap ramp, the addition of a third-floor courtroom, a third-floor fire escape, entry door replacements, flag display, and an exterior lighting display. At the ceremony, we will officially unveil the new 1886 Courthouse bell which was recently set on display on the courthouse square.

You’re invited to be a part of a truly momentous occasion! Join us at the revealing of the restored St. Landry Courthouse, where history comes alive. Take an immersive tour of the courthouse, and experience firsthand the transformation that has taken place. To add to the celebration, we’ll be serving refreshments. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to be part of history in the making.

On September 19, 2023, at 10:00 AM, the revealing ceremony will commence at the St. Landry Courthouse Square.
